Advocating Education for Peace, Sustainable Development and Environment

"There are two types of education... One should teach us how to make a living, and the other how to live."

- John Adams

We educate others and ourselves to learn and enhance our existing knowledge and skills. We all aim to become globally competitive to end up productive. But where is the thrust of our becoming educated?

Everyday, anywhere, violence, discriminations and a lot of oppressive and depressing events and stories unfold right before our eyes, be it in school, church, public governance and worst, at home! Where did we fail in educating this generation?

I believe global competitiveness need not bargain the value of one’s existence. It is not enough to develop our skills only for our own survival; rather it is a need to maximize our full potentials to see on a bigger perspective the kind of world we are into...but we will never see it, if we don't change our way of thinking!

Global education could open our eyes. Through the use of information and communication technology, we can reach out globally at a cheap cost and at our convenience. Maximizing these available tools around us could foster global respect as we understand each other's uniqueness and individual needs.

A lot have been taking advantage of these technologies for wrong motives, which further aggravates the complexities of our world. But the real battle lies on our own hands. Whether we choose to remain passive or be proactive in taking the solution. So many things have been said, written and read, but few have taken real steps.

The challenge to combat this abusive manipulation could start right within our homes and teaching institutions where all of us could partake towards this call for change.

We need education for peace and not for our own personal pleasure, for sustainable development and not for overnight good deeds and for environment and not for selfish consumptions.

What we need is EDUCATION FOR ALL, that will eradicate selfishness and make everyone learn how to make a living together in harmony with others.

EDUCATION FOR PEACE THE ENVIRONMENT AND SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT
I have read Cecilia's brilliant dissertation on advocacy focusing on the 2008 World Creative Forum in Manila which will attempt to address these issues: PEACE;SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT AND THE ENVIRONMENT.

The children of this planet have grown up with a
deeper level of connectivity than any other generation. From an early age they are connected
to politics, media, world events and even other
children all over the world who log onto community web sites.
We will have an extraordinary constellation of young people at our event in the Philippines next year who all radiate a limitless sense of energy and whose imaginations are fertile with dreams of success and prosperity but are also aware of their role in society to promote sustainability, universal friendship and caring for our environment.
To flourish, prosper and grow we need an Earth that is at Peace. After all peace is a luxury that we cannot afford as over the centuries mankind has paid a huge price.
I always have this saying in mind when I go out on
my missions for peace: -

'Wars are the stains of shame which centuries will
not wash away and we
cannot redress the wrongdoings of mankind, what we
can do is educate those
who will one day inherit the earth from us and teach them the values of peace, universal understanding and the joy of global friendship."
As educators we of the older and wiser generation have an
obligation to prepare the future leaders of the
world for the challenges that we have set out for them. This future generation of leaders will have a desire
and conviction to act globally in a way that has never been seen before and it is our job to
demonstrate the tools and standards that they can
aspire to.

Our delegates will be educated over several days and will hear inspirational words from our speakers on the issues concerning us today. Importantly it is the legacy that they will leave, the goodness they will be known for and the love of
human kind that will be evident in their actions……
